I love what I do in the construction industry as a Project Manager. When a new group of men enter my construction trailer, they immediately begin looking around the area for a man to talk to. It's been a male dominated line of work forever, but women are being promoted by demonstrating their construction knowledge, organizational skills and leadership abilities. Some women are intimidated by men and either take a step down when challenged or to convey authority by being a #$%&!, well let's say being chronically loud and rude. Then there are women like me which is more common in the industry we are more calculated and composed which makes us great leaders. I tend to be strong minded but fair. Working in a male dominated career isn't easy for everyone. Men often peacock to pull rank, some won't take direction from females, once when I introduced myself as the Project Manager, the worker asked for the superintendent to seemingly go around my authority or ignore my role. Many times they treat me as though I should play to my gender and get them coffee or perform secretarial duties for them. I let them know where the coffee is and that they can take care of themselves. I resist being too girlish and look somewhat plain to fit in. It feels demeaning at times. I truly love my career and I hope that through our voice that gender discrimination will end.
